About Smoushond

Country of Origin, History of Smoushonds

The exact origins of the Smoushond are unknown. However its looks suggest that it is partly related to the German Schnauzers. The Smoushond was popular in the late 1800's as a gentleman's companion. They were widely used in stables to kill rats.

To prevent it from dying out, the Hollandse Smoushond Club (Smoushondenclub) was formed in 1905 to document this small stable breed as a purebred dog. They look similar to the Brussels Griffon but to keep them distinct, they were given a Dutch name. They were almost lost during World War II. In 1973, some enthusiastic breeders tried developing this breed again with the remaining ones, crossed with Border Terriers.
