Thinking about a Pet-Based Career?
Dear Dog Lover,
Would you like to own your own business? If you like to meet new dogs and form relationships with their people, you may be a good candidate for owning (or co-owning or managing or working in) a business related to dogs. There are a variety of dog-related businesses - dog park, daycare, day camp, training, training facility, grooming, boarding, creating dog food or dog treats.
Once you decide on a business and do your research to find the right location, you will want to start putting together a business plan that includes ways to build your business. Here are some starter ideas:
1. Join some local business associations or clubs - the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Rotary Club. If you join, they will usually list all their members on their web site. It will give your business extra exposure. Offer a discount to other members (either for certain months or for recommending your business to someone).
2. Utilize a simple form of viral marketing. Write or have someone else write some small reports with your name, company, and website included. Post them on various article posting sites. Take 2-4 minute videos of things going on in your business and post them on YouTube - end them with an invitation to visit or purchase and give information about how to do it!
3. Improve your business by promoting customer feedback. Tell them you want their honest opinions about your business, good or bad. List those responses on your website. Have a quick and easy form for them to fill out while you finish their order.
4. Build alliances with other dog-related businesses. You can trade links or ads, create joint venture deals by cross promoting your services, etc. Put your brochures or cards in their businesses and let them put theirs in your business. Sponsor a dog-related event together. Display at any and every dog-related event within 50 miles of your business. Work with the local Humane Societies. Have a give-away (sample dog biscuit or certificate for 10% off their first order) to put into every packet or for every customer.
5. Design your web site to be a valuable resource for people. Include original content and links to other interesting dog-related web sites. Add to it every month. Include pictures, short videos, links, and fresh seasonal content.
6. Practice great customer service. Think of ways in which you can do things better than your competition. Consider bulk orders, delivery, free shipping, buy-one-get-one-half-off, or other ways to bring your customers back. Ask what customers want and cannot find and then find a way to offer their needs.
People who own dogs want their dogs to be healthy and happy. They are often willing to spend the money to pamper their pooches if you can give them some value for their money. Remember when you talk about your business, don't just list the features, but tell people why there is a value or a benefit to each feature!
