#1 Dog Behavior Solution Revealed!
Dear Dog Lover,
Some dogs seem perfect . . . until summer. Suddenly they become diggers. Some dogs dig holes throughout the yard, but don’t seem to be burying anything or digging anything up. Some dogs dig a shallow depression and lay in it. Some dogs follow you as you plant flowers or bulbs and dig them up. One dog we had pulled all the impatiens out of my planters on my deck and shoot them and then chewed up what was left of them. Why do dogs dig?
It is instinct for dogs to dig. Originally dogs would dig a den. On a hot day, that is one of the things many dogs will do if left outside. They will dig a depression and lay on the cool soil. Since they do not perspire like people, they have very few ways of cooling their bodies and this is very effective. Often, allowing your dog to create a “den” under a shrub will satisfy his need for digging. He will go to “his den” whenever he is outside and enjoy its cooling effect.
Dogs dig when they are bored. If your dog is an outdoor dog and he digs all the time, he is telling you he is bored. Give him outdoor toys to play with while you are away from home. Put him in an area where there are things to watch. If he is a mostly indoor dog, but goes outside for extended periods, watch him while he is outside to see how long it takes for him to start digging. If he does it after 30 minutes, always make sure to bring him inside after 25 minutes.
Dogs dig when they are stressed. If there is a new baby in the house or you have recently moved, you will likely see more digging. This relieves his tension and makes him feel better. Help him by giving him more attention. Also give him more exercise and something to think about by taking walks.
Dogs dig because of the breed they are. For example, terriers were bred for hundreds of years to dig out varmints. Now we tell them not to dig - that’s like telling you not to breathe! Almost all members of the terrier group and some members of the sporting group and some Nordic dogs must be taught not to dig and given alternative behaviors.
Give your dog a specific place he is allowed to dig. You can even bury some fun toys there. Then take him to that place and give him the command, “Tippy, go dig.” Use your hands to show him that it is okay to dig in this place. Play with him with his toys when you and he find them. Do this every day. If he starts to dig in another place, take him to his “digging place” and give him the command “Tippy, go dig.”
Make a shake can by putting some coins in a coffee can or baby bottle with a lid. Keep the shake can by the door. As soon as your dog starts to dig, shake the can to get his attention and then say “no dig.” Use a gruff voice. When he starts to dig again, repeat the shake can and command of “no dig.” The third time, use the shake can and command but go get your dog and take him to his “digging place” or to a time out area (a utility room or bathroom or kitchen closed off with baby gates) for 10-15 minutes.
If there is a specific area or flowerbed where your dog digs, sprinkle cayenne pepper and hot pepper sauce over the ground. When he digs in that area, the pepper will burn his paws and he will try to lick it off, getting his tongue burning also. After a couple of times of this, he will leave that area alone.
The key is to be consistent. If you reprimand him for digging in a spot one day but let him dig there the next day, he will never learn that you really do not want him to dig there. Thus, you have to send the same message all day every day.
