Origin and History
of the Breed
The Brandlbracke has its
origin in Austria. Its ancestors are the so-called
Keltenbracken. This dog is also closely related
to the Tyrolean Bracke, the Styrian Rauhhaarbracke
and the Slovak Kopov. It is a true descendant
of the Celtic Hound. The name Brandlbracke
has been derived from the German term ‘Brand’
(and the diminutive ‘Brandt’)
meaning ‘fire’ as there are little
marks of fire red on the sleek black body
of the Brandlbracke Dog.

A General Description of
the Dog
The dog has a short, thick and
shiny coat and is black colored with a bright, sharp,
remote dark brown border. The coat is mad up of
smooth and shiny hairs. There may be white markings
on the coat of the chest, neck and feet. The dog
has a strong and elastic body. Its chest is fairly
broad, very deep and pretty long with long ribcage.
The forehead of the Brandlbracke is high. It has
got a very straight muzzle that is medium sized
and tapering to a point. Its eyebrows give it an
educated look. The eyes are brown/chestnut in color
and clear. The nose of the dog is black in color
or colored according to the color of the dog’s
coat.
The forelegs of the dog are perpendicular
and well angled in relation to the shoulder while
the hind legs are broad and muscular. The hind legs
have straight and strong hocks. The feet of the
Brandlbracke are round and strong having tough pads.
The toes are arched and compact. The tail of the
Brandlbracke lies low but the dog can carry it high
when in search of game.

of the dogs vary between 33 pounds and 50 pounds.

These are loving dogs that remain
high-spirited. They have flowing gaits and swift

with hunters and trail silently. The specialty of
these dogs is work on the cold scent. However, the
Brandlbracke can also be utilized in the hunting
of fox and hare- for which it gives tongue.

Being hunting dogs the Brandlbracke
need considerable exercising. They ought to be allowed
to run and retrieve balls in a similar manner as
they would be retrieving game as aides of hunters.

Problems
This has been known to be a strong
and healthy breed. However, as in the case of other
dogs in case one is adopting a Brandlbracke puppy
then one need make sure that the puppy does not
suffer from hip dysplasia and OCD (osteochondritis
dissecans). The eyes of the puppy must be checked
for verifying that they are normal and PRA clear.
