Country of Origin, History of Manchester Terriers
The Manchester Terrier was believed to be developed from the Black and Tan Terrier and the Whippet.
Traditionally the Black and Tan Terrier was used as a rat killer. This is why they were widely popular in rat-infested cities - in the 19th century, Manchester, in the UK was one of them.
In an effort to produce a dog that could excel at rat baiting and rabbit coursing, Black and Tan Terriers were crossed with the Whippet.
By 1860 Manchester had become the breed centre for these new terriers, and so they became known as Manchester Terriers. Because of their demeanor, they were called the Gentleman's Terrier in Victorian times.

A General Appearance of the Dog:
Manchester Terries have a sleek, athletic body and a tight coat of rich mahogany tan and jet black. They look like mini Doberman Pinschers and large Miniature Pinschers. They have a long and wedge-shaped head.
Height: About 10 - 12 inches tall.
Weight: The Toy variety(not exceeding 12 pounds). The Standard variety (not exceeding 22 pounds).
Often mistaken for a “Miniature Doberman”, this breed called Manchester Terrier is truly a breed of its own. This dog lives to please and responds well to early, consistent training. It is important to keep its energy directed in useful play or with tricks so it does not become bored and destructive.
Crate training is a good option for this breed that loves to chew, as it will keep both home and pet safe while you are away. Having both intelligence and spirit, Manchester Terrier is a good candidate for agility or obedience training, making a great experience for families with older children.
While their watchdog instincts make a good breed for apartment living, the barking that accompanies it must be dealt with in early training.
Are they suited to homes with kids?
Small children and non-canine pets that were introduced while still young should be accepted. Respect should be shown to the pets’ toys and food.
Grooming is relatively easy with regular brushing and nail clipping and baths only as needed.
Because of their high level of activity weight should not be a concern but overfeeding should be avoided. This is a very healthy breed with few if any health concerns.
The skin can be sensitive though and should be protected from prolonged exposure to sun.
