About Cavapoo

Country of Origin, History of Cavapoos

There is no known date or person who started the Cavapoo breed, but it is believed it may have existed naturally over the years. However, it was only in the 1990s that designer dog breeders in United States and Canada mixed Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodles to develop Cavapoo or Cavadoodle to have an intelligent, affectionate, companion dog.

Cavadoodles even became popular in Australia around the same time. As demand for mixed breed dogs kept increasing, Cavapoo became more and more popular.

A General Appearance of the Dog

The Cavapoo is a combination of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle (either Toy or Miniature), so it will have some traits of each breed. See both breeds to better understand your dog and what to expect.

Cavapoos are intelligent and want to learn to please their owners, so owners need to start training using positive reinforcement at an early age. The dog thrives on human companionship and will do well in a family setting. It gets along well with other pets (cats and dogs). It needs a walk each day for socialization and to keep it from getting overweight.

Coat

The Cavapoo can have more characteristics of the Poodle or of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Most are hypoallergenic. Colors can be solid or include two or three colors, including black, brown, cream, fawn, chocolate, gold, chestnut, apricot, and white. Their fur is considered medium to long, dense, and wavy. Some resemble a Poodle more with a curlier coat.

Cavapoo Personality Traits

Dog with lovers

Temperament of the Dog

Cavapoos are eager to please and do well in families and with other pets. They love to be active and use their intelligence. They adapt well to various living situations and strive to please their people.

The Cavapoo is a loving, gentle dog who likes to stay busy or be in someone's lap. It is a great dog for people of any age, singles or couples or families. They love being with their families and may cry when left alone. They are quick learners and respond well to positive reinforcement. They tend to become the boss if you let them (small dog syndrome).

The Cavapoo, or Cavoodle, is a smart, obedient little dog who loves to solve problems. They love obedience and agility. Start training them early and continue to add to their knowledge throughout their lifetime using positive reinforcement and being careful not to be negative.

Better suited to an indoor or outdoor lifestyle?

Cavapoos are indoor dogs who love a good walk or a fenced yard to explore. They love to meet people and go places with their owners. They should be leashed any time they are not inside a fenced area.

Are they suited to homes with kids?

The Cavapoo makes a good small dog for a family, but young children should be supervised with them. They will love all family members.

Training

They love and need training. Housetraining is easy with this breed. Most dogs of this breed love to learn, so start training early and use lots of positive reinforcement. They want to learn commands and tricks and they can problem solve.

Cavapoo Activity Level

How active is the breed?

Cavapoos need daily activity such as a walk or good playtimes with toys. Walks will also help with socialization and Cavapoos love to meet people and know about their surroundings. Keep your dog on a leash when walking or outside of a fenced area.

Grooming

At least three brushings a week will be required (daily is best), along with daily brushing of their teeth, and toenail clipping every 3-4 weeks. When brushing, check the ears for debris and dirt and clean if needed. Since they have hanging ears, they are prone to ear infections and will need prescription medicine. If they develop an odor, they will need a bath. You will need to have a professional groomer clip your dog’s coat every 6 weeks

Health and Care

The Cavapoo may require more maintenance than other breeds.

Because of the health situations of Cavaliers and Poodles, the Cavapoo may be prone to congenital heart disease, progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, and slipping kneecaps.

Keep on a leash when outside of a fenced area.

Life Span: 12–15 years
