Country of Origin, History of Borzois
Brozoi were bred to course (chase) small prey of hare and vermin, they were also adept at hunting down wolf and even bear in native Russia. This ability to hunt in packs like wolves gave the breed its’ earlier name of Russian Wolfhound.
These breeding characteristics are still apparent in today’s Borzoi and should be considered when choosing one to share your home.

A General Appearance of the Dog
Borzoi means “swift” in Russian. The Borzoi is a sight hound with an elegant stance and an aristocratic demeanor. A tall, narrow frame and arching spine sets this breed apart and enables it to run fast and chase prey with incredible speed and agility.
Males can reach 28" in height
Females are slightly smaller with a height around 26".
Males weigh 75-105 lbs.
Females weight approximately 60-90 lbs.
Temperament of the Breed
Generally, Borzoi are aloof to strangers but may become very affectionate and even “sing” (yodel or howl) in place of barking to communicate.
Borzoi can live beside a family cat indoors if raised from an early age, but the same cat outside in the open area becomes fair game, no different than a rabbit or squirrel. Their movements are so quick that the pursuit can be short and the result can be deadly.
Better suited to an indoor or outdoor lifestyle?
A fenced yard is a must for unsupervised exercise and space to run at top speed is needed on a regular basis. Invisible fencing doesn't work for this breed.
Their graceful movement and lack of need to bark makes apartment living a possibility too.
Borzoi are light on the lead and with training. They make great pets for runners, bicyclers and those who rollerblade. Cat-like at home, they require little space inside and have a great deal of “down time” between exercises.
Like other tall dogs, Borzoi has to be watched for bloat (gas in the intestine) and attention needs to be paid to offering small meals instead of one large one. Exercise should never come immediately after feeding.
The other health issue for this breed is its' sensitivity to drugs, anesthesia in particular. Veterinary care should be in the hands of someone familiar with this sensitivity and who knows how to respond.
