Pumi: Origin, Personality, Fitness & Health
Also Known As:
Country of Origin, History of the breed
The Pumi was developed in
the 1700's. It was bred from the Puli and
crossed with German and French prick-eared
sheepdogs, probably the Pomeranian or Hutespitz.
The blood of ancient terriers probably also
flows in its veins. This dog has evolved into
a breed of its own over the last 300 years
and is gaining popularity in its homeland.

A General Description of
The Pumi is a cute, light-bodied,
square dog. The elongated muzzle of the Pumi is
the most distinctive feature of the face. The slightly
oblique, dark eyes have close-fitting lids. The
tail is always merry and carried high. The ears
are upright and tipped forward. The compact hind
feet are set back from the body. The chest is deep
and ribs are somewhat flat. The feet are strong,
with elastic pads and hard nails. The medium-length,
curling coat come in black, all shades of gray and
inches (33-48 cm.)
pounds (8-15 kg.)
Temperament of the Dog
The Pumi is a vigorous and sturdy
sheepdog, a successful guard dog and hunting dog,
an efficient ratter and a wonderful family companion.
It is alert, intelligent, protective, loyal, affectionate,
cheerful, watchful, energetic willful and has a
superb sense of hearing. It is shy and rather mistrustful
of strangers. The Pumi uses its voice liberally
and consistently. A well brought up and socialized
Pumi will get along with children as long as they
do not pester it. This breed can be dog-aggressive
and has a tendency to wander.
How active is the breed?
The Pumi has endless energy and
needs vigorous exercise, including long daily walks
or jogs. The Pumi will enjoy playing catch, chasing
Frisbees, and will excel in agility skills classes
and obedience training.
Suitable for apartment
They are outdoor dogs and will
be at their best living on a farm where they will
find enough work to do, such as guarding the entrance
and keeping the livestock together. If it is to
live in an urban environment then it must be provided
with enough activities to keep it occupied.
The coat of the Pumi is easy to
groom. The braided, medium-length coat does not
mat or shed easily. Combing and brushing (every
week) and trimming (every 2-4 weeks) will keep it
looking nice. Excess hair has to be removed from
inside the ears.
The Pumi is a robust and healthy
dog in general. A few cases of hip dysplasia and
patellar luxation have been identified.
