About Saluki

Saluki is a graceful sight hound, bred to course (chase down) small prey. Its instinct to course makes it a fast runner and requires lots of space with safety provided.

Should you be considering a Saluki, know that their need to run freely but safely needs to be satisfied frequently.

They train well to the lead and can appreciate long walks; however, their gait is not suited to most joggers, rather to rollerblades and those on bicycles.

Appearing guarded and aloof, this breed is really more sensitive then anything and loves companionship, but in small numbers.

Best with other Salukis, they can be shy and submissive with other breeds. Gentle training is required and, with the exception of their need chase prey, are responsive to most commands.

They are fine with older children but as with adults can bond more closely with one individual.

Hygiene is important to the breed and their cat-like grooming demonstrates this.

Grooming

Grooming requirements depend on the density of the coat but should include frequent brushing and nail clipping. Since Salukis are prideful of their appearance, bathing should be done only when needed.

Health Issues

Eye Disease and some cancers are found in this breed but quality breeding can reduce the possibility of occurrence. The nose is sensitive to sunburn so care needs to be taken to prevent this from happening.

Height

Females are slightly smaller than males and the breed can be found to stand 23-28” in height.

Weight: They weigh between 40-65 lbs.

Life Expectancy: 10-12 years.
