About Patterdale Terrier

Country of Origin, History of Patterdale Terriers

The Patterdale Terrier of modern times refers to the mainly black smooth coated fell terrier first popularized by Cyril Breay from Kirkby Lonsdale and Frank Buck from Leyburn in Yorkshire during the early part of the 1950s.

The origins of the breed can be traced back to the cross breeding of The Old English Terrier (the original black terrier) and the Northumberland Pit Terrier (now extinct).

The Patterdale was developed in the rugged hills in the north of England, where farming was not possible. Sheep farming was popular and the Patterdale Terrier was employed to keep the predators away.

Patterdale Terrier Personality Traits

Dog with lovers

Temperament of the Breed

The Patterdale Terrier is a laid back, persistent, robust, independent, determined and tough hunting dog and watchdog. However, they are not 'lap dogs'. It enjoys "curling up at the heating duct" in the house. It is an excellent digger, intently willing to encounter and attack any mammal that has gone to ground. The Patterdale should not be trusted with non-canine pets.

Living Condition

The Patterdale Terrier is not recommended for apartment life. They are relatively inactive indoors provided they get enough exercise during the day. The Patterdale can be kenneled with two or three other terriers. If left in a yard unsupervised, he can dig underneath the fence. The fence should be firm in the ground, and high enough so he cannot jump it to find game.

Training

They need to be taken on a daily, brisk, long walk or jog and would tremendously enjoy running and hiking. Exercise and a hardy stock of prey is the recommended way to satisfy his hunting cravings. The Patterdale Terrier can be very difficult to train. He has a very short attention span and if given the opportunity, will bolt at the first sign of movement. A firm and experienced handler is a must if this breed is to become properly trained.
