About Patterdale Terrier
Country of Origin, History of the breed
The Patterdale Terrier of
modern times refers to the mainly black smooth
coated fell terrier first popularised by Cyril
Breay from Kirkby Lonsdale and Frank Buck
from Leyburn in Yorkshire during the early
part of the 1950s.
The Patterdale Terrier has
a short, coarse, weatherproof, broken or wire
coat that comes in red, brown, black &
tan, bronze, grizzle or black. The face is
thickset and the eyes are inquisitive. The
widely spaced ears are set high and hang in
v-shaped folds. The well-built body is thicker
than most any terrier. The legs are solid,
with medium-sized feet and sable pads.

Temperament of the Breed
The Patterdale Terrier is a laid
back, persistent, robust, independent, determined
and tough hunting dog and watchdog. However, they
are not ‘lap dogs’. It enjoys "curling
up at the heating duct" in the house. It is
an excellent digger, intently willing to encounter
and attack any mammal that has gone to ground. The
Patterdale should not be trusted with non-canine
The Patterdale Terrier is not recommended
for apartment life. They are relatively inactive
indoors provided they get enough exercise during
the day. The Patterdale can be kenneled with two
or three other terriers. If left in a yard unsupervised,
he can dig underneath the fence. The fence should
be firm in the ground, and high enough so he cannot
jump it to find game.
Exercise & Training
They need to be taken on a daily,
brisk, long walk or jog and would tremendously enjoy
running and hiking. Exercise and a hardy stock of
prey is the recommended way to satisfy his hunting
cravings. The Patterdale Terrier can be very difficult
to train. He has a very short attention span and
if given the opportunity, will bolt at the first
sign of movement. A firm and experienced handler
is a must if this breed is to become properly trained.
It requires minimal grooming.
Brushing with a firm bristle or rubber brush will
remove excess hair. This breed does love to dig
so be sure to clean his feet before coming inside.
It is a very hardy dog. There
has been no report of genetic diseases.
About 11-13 years.
