About
Ibizan Hound
The Ibizan
Hound is a very old breed with a distinctive
appearance of color and body. A pack animal
used for hunting for centuries, this breed
uses sight, scent and excellent hearing to
track and chase down its prey.
People, as well as other
dogs, are considered part of the pack and
the Ibizan Hound will view his owner as such
and be loyal and affectionate.

Strangers and new additions to
the family such as a baby or puppy need to be considered
by this breed and should be introduced slowly until
familiarity is achieved.
Small un-attended pets like cats,
mice, etc. are not safe with this breed. The need
to run in a large, safe area will be required and
fencing should be higher than normal.
Ibizan Hounds can jump unusually
high from a standing position, and while they love
their owners, they will run far and wide without
regard for return, until ready (at which time they
will be lost and several days away from home).
Apartment living can be considered
if the exercise requirement is met with daily walks
on lead or even jogging. They are quiet and well
mannered inside and are able to be trained easily
if done so with a low voice.
Health Issues
There are three kinds of coats
in this breed: smooth, longhaired and wire-haired,
none requiring more than a regular brushing and
bathing and frequent nail clipping.
Hereditary nerve and muscle disease
exist in this breed but responsible breeding will
help you find a healthy pet. Sensitivity to anesthesia
and pesticides (flea powders) are to be considered
when choosing this breed.
