Popular Family Dog Breeds
In reality any dog breed, whether purebred or
mixed breed, can be a potentially wonderful family
dog. There are some breeds or dog types that have
definitely become very popular family dogs due
to their outstanding temperaments and ability
to love and interact with all members of the family.
Typically family dogs tend to be medium to large
breeds, only because the small and toy dogs may
not be suitable for families with very small children.
The most popular family dog breeds have several
characteristics that are common, however each
is also a unique animal with individual traits
and their own personality. Choosing a purebred
dog allows you to more closely predict what these
temperaments will be, but a mixed breed dog or
a rescue dog from a shelter is also an excellent
choice. The top dog breeds for families include:
Labrador
Retrievers
The Lab is the most popular dog in the United
States according to the American Kennel Club.
The Lab is a highly energetic and very kid friendly
breed. They are both intelligent as well as playful
and they make terrific companion pets for households
with other dogs and non-canine pets. The Lab does
best in a house with a big, fenced yard and lots
of people in and around the house all the time.
They can be an outdoor dog but really prefer to
be inside with the family.
Golden Retrievers
The Golden Retriever is one
of the calmer breeds of dogs, loving and loyal
without being aggressive or territorial. They
are very patient and kind towards children and
seem to enjoy being involved in everything the
kids do. The Golden Retriever does require regular
grooming and will be a heavy shedder during the
spring and autumn. The Golden Retriever is great
with other pets and dogs and also make excellent
companion dogs for seniors.
Beagles
The Beagle is a friendly, loving
and active dog that also has a laid back and calm
side to their personality. The Beagle loves to
be the center of attention however they also will
curl up at your feet and just relax. The Beagle
will have the typical baying type bark that is
both distinctive and part of the charm of the
breed.
Beagles may need socialization to adjust to cats
and other pets in the house if not raised together,
however overall they are a great companion breed.
Cocker Spaniels
The Cocker Spaniel is one of
the smaller popular family breeds but they have
all the good temperament and friendly personality
traits of the larger breeds. They are strong and
durable dogs that love children and other pets.
Cocker Spaniels love to be outdoors and active
during the day and inside with the family at night.
Bulldogs
Although more popular in specific
areas than others, the Bulldog is actually a terrific
family dog. They are slow moving and deliberate
in their actions, but they are loyal, loving and
extremely patient dogs with children and other
animals. Some Bulldogs may be very stubborn so
early and consistent training is important.
