Greta Garbo And Audrey Hepburn, a
Purebred Afghan Hound was
adopted by
Christine Kimball from
United States. |
Here's how
Christine Kimball describes
Greta Garbo And Audrey Hepburn :
Until five years ago, i have never had more than one afghan hound at a time. then i was seized by a moment of temporary insanity that i do not regret. having two afghans reminds me of how my children amaze me: five utterly unique gifts from god. by what according to human standards would be embarrassing ancestry, greta is both auntie and half sister to audrey. not only the same breed and sex but intimately related, they could not have more different personalities.
greta is sensitive to every nuance around her. audrey goes with the flow. audrey adores her dog food, but greta often couldn’t care less, and wanders off to leave audrey to inhale both dogs’ portions. greta takes guard duty as her personal life or death responsibility whether on the sidewalk or watching from a sentinel post at a window. audrey occasionally chimes in with her phony ferocious bark that scares no one and always makes me laugh. when relaxing greta parks her head flat on the ground like a bookend, but audrey uses her puffy paws as pillows. audrey is not ashamed to be obviously alert for signals of approval, but greta feigns indifference to human affirmation. she misses nothing but slyly does surveillance shifting her eyeballs but not her skull. greta is thin, angular and boney. audrey is a canine barrel, the only plump afghan i have ever known. greta has the classic afghan saddle of short fur down her back and a thick tail with an elegant long fringe of lighter colored fur. audrey, who is three years old, has a strange combination of puffy puppy fur and silky adult hound fur and as yet no sign of a saddle. audrey always carries her tail high, a jaunty crooked question mark tilted at a rakish angle to the right. greta normally carries her tail at half-mast pointed straight out from her rump, but often drooping like a lethargic rope between her hindquarters. greta’s tail is a fluid continuation of her back and spine. audrey’s tail looks like a stringy after thought that was pasted on later.
greta and audrey have developed a system of assigned seating. when they hear their leashes removed from the hooks by the kitchen door, greta appears first standing to the left. next, after snacking from the dog bowls, audrey stands at attention to greta’s right. for three or four walks a day they always line up in the same order and formation. likewise, in our bedroom their couch overlooks the front yard and the intersection of two major streets. from this perch, the dogs survey their domain. audrey invariably sits on the left side of the couch on top of her doggy booster seat, a throw pillow, her two fuzzy feet serving as her chin rest on the back of the couch. greta reclines on the right side of the couch leaning the right side of her body against the back of the couch, her right paw and chin striking a debonair pose along the top of the couch. did they plan this, i wonder? did they discuss it one day and decide, “ok, from now on i’ve got the right and you’ve got the left”? do they have some sort of dog equivalent of the nato treaty that they both feel honor bound to observe? or maybe they’re just like humans who keep on sitting in the same spot, even when there’s no assigned seating.

Does
Greta garbo and audrey hepburn 's behavior show the inherent Afghan Hound
characteristics?
Yes, indeed. afghans are independent, stubborn, thieving escape artists who do not come when called. they are also sweet, affectionate clowns who are elegant, graceful and beautiful. the fastest breed on rough terrain, they also enjoy long naps on the couch or bed. |
Special Achievement of Greta Garbo And Audrey Hepburn :
Afghans who escape are very difficult to catch. they'll let you get up near to them and then rocket off again. you must trick them into chasing you, then you have one chance to turn and pounce. always have a collar with "reward" and phone on them. mine are microchipped with that contact info on a collar tag. |
Christine Kimball's advice on what type of family should adopt
a Afghan Hound:
My afghans have been fine with children and cats. afghans are sensitive and should be trained with positive reinforcement and never with physical punishment. they require lots of grooming, exercise and cannot be off lead except in area with very high fences. |
