Why Do Dogs Need Toys?

Why do dogs need toys? A very valid question. After all, if they were living in the wild, then would they have toys? Actually, only domesticated dogs need toys to replace activities or reproduce in part, the life they would have lived if they were not domesticated.

The old adage that a tired dog is a happy dog is all too true. And more importantly, you can say that a mentally stimulated dog is a well-behaved dog.

Boredom is often the root cause for a whole lot of behavioral problems such as chewing things in the home, destroying furniture, digging holes, self-mutilation or even barking constantly. If your dog is exhibiting any of these chronic traits, chances are your dog is bored. And boredom almost always leads to trouble.

Once you have got yourself a pet, his physical and mental well being is your responsibility. For this you need to understand the temperament of dogs in general.

You must know that all dogs like to work and they also like to play. They like to be involved. They also need a certain amount of exercise every day and whether you like it or not; they like to do it with you!

Dogs, as you must be aware, are pack animals that crave for bonding with other living things. And since your dog is not with his pack of dog playmates, you and your family, automatically, become his pack.

Dog toys give your dog safe items to explore – dogs seem to be fascinated with dangerous household items. When your pet is attracted to items they should not have – giving him one of his toys is a perfect distraction.

Give him, lot of attention when he is playing with his toys. But if he picks up something forbidden to play with – ignore him completely and simply take the thing away. Remember, negative attention amounts to attention in your dog’s mind.

Dogs benefit from being challenged. A bored dog is going to find a way to entertain itself, maybe by eating your couch or digging in the yard. Because boredom can lead to destructive behaviour, it is essential that you provide your dog with appropriate toys that fight monotony and offer enticing play, sometimes this may be met with a reward such as carefully hidden treat.

When you are shopping for dog toys make sure you get a variety of sounds, textures, and challenges. Some sound toys make noise when you bite them, others when you shake them, others you just have to nudge. Toys are great for exercising both the brain and all four legs.

Here are a few of the important benefits of dog toys:

• To train dogs: Toys can be use very effectively as training tools – at the park, or teaching how to use the doggie door.

• For exercise: There are plenty of toys available for playing with your dog. Besides keeping you and your pet fit, it keeps him in good shape, burning off calories that would otherwise be unused. They also help to strengthen a dog's muscles, which along with diet, reinforces good bone structure.

• Improves your bonding with him: Regular interaction with constructive play will help build good relations with your dog and will also encourage good behaviour in your pet.

• Provide comfort: There are many times in your dog’s life when he needs to be soothed and comforted. A toy can help ease the separation from a mother or smooth the transition from being a litter member.

• For chewing: All dogs possess a natural urge to chew and that’s why chew toys get your pet’s undivided attention. You must ensure that he doesn’t eat the plastic though.

• For cleaning teeth: While your pooch is merrily chewing his toy, it will be quietly cleaning and massaging his teeth and gums.

• To prevent boredom: Toys play a major role in preventing boredom especially when you leave your dog alone.

The right dog toy can make the difference between fun and play or a choking or obstruction danger. Many common household objects could be potentially perilous items. Gain the awareness you need to prevent any hazardous situations which can often result in high vet bills. Rely on the professionals who can offer you the best pet toys that are tried and tested to be safe.
