#1 Way to Solving Dog Behavior Problem!
October 29, 2009 on 3:23 am | In Dog Behavior |Dear Dog Lover,
Does your dog like to bark? Dogs bark to communicate, but dogs also bark for a variety of other reasons. Some dogs bark to hear themselves bark I think. Other dogs bark at anything that moves - even if it is 'way down the street. Some dogs seem to have such acute hearing that they can hear and bark at a car door being slammed three streets away.
Whatever your dog's reason for barking (or starting to bark) is, you have to figure out how to get his attention and get him to stop. It isn't really the barking that is so annoying; it is the fact that he doesn't know when to stop barking or doesn't obey when you tell him to stop barking.
There are some tried-and-true steps to take to control your dog's barking.
1. Determine what triggers his barking.
2. Pick one trigger to work on. If there is more than one trigger, pick one to start with it. Preferably pick a trigger that happens consistently at a specific time.
3. Put Max's leash on him about 5-10 minutes before the trigger happens.
4. As soon as it is time for the trigger, take hold of Max's leash and say firmly, "Quiet."
5. If Max starts to bark, give a sharp tug on his leash to get his attention and repeat, "Quiet."
6. Each time he starts to bark, sharply tug his leash and remind him, "Quiet."
7. When he lets the trigger happen without barking, praise him by saying, "Good Quiet" and give him a treat.
8. Continue for as long as the trigger occurs.
9. Repeat daily for a week. After a week, if he is responding to your command, only give treats sometimes, but always praise him when he is quiet when the trigger happens.
10. Count the number of reminders you have to give him the second day and the seventh day - it should be less the seventh day, signifying great progress. When you get down to 3-4 reminders in a given amount of time, you may want to start working on another trigger and only using the word "Quiet" as a reminder for this trigger.
Remember that any time you try to modify your dog's behavior by using a system of punishment (tug on collar) or reward (praise and treat) or a combination, it will take a while for your dog to fully associate the punishment or reward with the specific behavior. He will learn faster if the punishment or reward occurs within 5 seconds - preferably one second - of the behavior and if they occur with consistency.
What does success look like? Ultimately, Max will bark once or twice or for 30 seconds and then either look at you to see if he should quit or continue or respond to your "Quiet" command by ceasing to bark. That is the look and sound of sweet success!
