#1 Dog Training Breakthrough Discovered

Dear Dog Lover,

I work with many people each month who are having problems with their dogs. Some have trouble with incessant barking, others deal with constant chewing, some feel their dog is too aggressive, and others just want to know how to get their dog to walk nicely beside them. My specific advice to each might vary depending on the specific problem or the dog breed or the history of the problem, but one thing stays constant in all my advice: Be Consistent.

Let me give you some examples of being inconsistent with your dog:

Last week your dog Cocoa got on the couch and you said “down” and took her off the couch. Last night Cocoa jumped in your lap, causing you to spill what you were drinking and you yelled, “Down.” Today Cocoa jumped on you when you came home from work and you said, “down, Cocoa, get down so I can get in the house.” You meant ‘quit jumping on me and scratching my legs.’ Later you wanted Cocoa to lie on her mat, so you told her, “down.”

Trig, your Golden Retriever, likes to play. When you take him outside to play, you tell him, “come on.” Later you want him to come in the house so you yell “come” at him. And when you get ready to take him for a walk, you say, “come on.”

For these dogs, one command means three or four different things. Dogs’ brains do not work like that. One command must be associated with one behavior and vice versa, one behavior goes with each command.

Use the “down” command to mean what it is commonly accepted to mean in the dog training world - lie down. That way if you dog is at a kennel or you take him for some obedience training, you will be using the same command in the same way that other people do. Your dog will know exactly what to do no matter who says “down.” And, amazingly, he will obey the “down” command from anybody!

Find another command for the each of the other uses of “down.” Make sure that the command you use is positive. Instead of a negative like “no lap” use a positive like “floor” which really says what you want the dog to do instead of what you want to dog to stop doing.

If your dog jumps on several pieces of furniture (chairs, couch, bed) and you want to put a stop to it, you could use the same command for each piece of furniture. A good command might be “off” in this case. A good command for keeping a dog from jumping on you or your guests at the door is “floor” which is used to mean ‘keep all four feet on the floor.’

For the various actions of the Golden Retriever, his owner could use “playtime” to mean ‘let’s go outside and play.’ If “come” is issued sternly to get the dog in the house and he does not come, the owner might change to “in the house.” And a wonderfully happy command for going on a walk is “let’s walk.”

When you define what you really want your dog to do in positive terms and you are consistent in the words you use, your dog will want to obey and please you. When you put a smile on your face when you issue those positive commands, they are said in a tone that makes them sound like fun. When you reward your dog for obeying your commands with either praise or treats or both, he knows exactly what you expect with each command.
