4 Dog Training Secrets Revealed!

Dear Dog Lover,

Training a dog should be based on positive reinforcement and not negative. Instead of yelling at your dog after he chews up your slipper, distract your dog from the slipper while he is bringing it to the living room. Rather than yelling at your dog or slapping him for sitting crooked when he comes, praise him for coming and then gently move his body to the correct way to sit. Your dog will be willing to learn new things and to “perform” for you.

Dogs love to get attention. If we yell at them for doing wrong things like jumping on people or taking things off the kitchen counter, they will do those things again because they got attention. However, if we ban them from our presence and our attention when they are naughty, they will be far less likely to want to try those things again.

Training our dogs to do the things that please us gives them positive attention and positive reinforcement and makes us happy and proud. Teach your dog to heel and give him praise (positive reinforcement) every time he does it right. You can even praise him while he is doing it which is even more effective. This is a good time to use a clicker.

If you anticipate something your dog is going to do wrong like barking at someone walking along the sidewalk and praise him for not doing it, he will look at you next time to see if he should or should not bark. If your dog starts to dig in the flowerbed and you call to him and he quits, praise him (”good no dig”) and use the clicker to let him know he has done the right thing. A few minutes later, when he is not digging, praise him again and use the clicker.

Train your dog to sit-stay when someone comes to the door. When he does it right, praise him and click the clicker. When he greets someone at the door but keeps all four feet on the floor, praise him and use the clicker.

When you play with your dog and he brings back the ball, praise him and click the clicker. If he drops it, that’s worth more praise and another click. And if he waits until you release him to go get it again, use the clicker and praise again.

Once you start looking for ways to praise your dog for doing the right thing, it is easy to find lots of times when positive reinforcement is appropriate. Your dog will appreciate your training him in this way. And both of you will find it more fun and interesting. His learning will be because he wants to please you and get the praise. And you will think of all kinds of fun things to teach him because he is fun to train!
