3 Reasons To Fire Your Dog Trainer
April 30, 2009 on 12:27 am | In Dog Training | No CommentsDear Dog Lover,
All dogs need training. They need housebreaking. They need basic manners. And they need some behavior training.
You may not think you will be showing your dog in an AKC obedience class, but there are certain expectations for every dog that lives with people. Those expectations include:
Not peeing or pooping in the house
Not jumping on people who come to the door
Not biting you or your guests
Coming when called
Walking nicely without pulling or knocking your down on a walk
Not grabbing food off the counter or table
Getting along with other pets in the household
There are other things that it would be nice if your dog did - things like:
Staying quietly in a crate without tearing up the crate
Stop barking when told
Sitting when asked
Staying when asked
Not tearing up flowerbeds
Then there are the things we all hope our dog will soon outgrow like tearing up our slippers or chewing the leg on the couch. Some dogs have problems with running around crazy for hours or whining when left alone.
These are all issues that can be solved or at least mitigated by training. And the training for these situations can be done by any dog owner like you (or me). When you look at these lists, that might seem overwhelming, but it is not. All you have to do is start with the basics and work your way up.
Where do you start? Well, the most needful thing is to housebreak your dog properly and thoroughly. Housebreaking may also include crate training. These often go hand-in-hand. This will take 3-6 months.
However, you do not have to wait until you have finished housebreaking to start teaching your dog to ‘heel’ and ’sit.’ And you can teach commands like ‘leave it’ and ‘no bark’ as soon as you can get your dog’s attention. Obviously, ‘no’ is a command your dog will start hearing within 48 hours of his arrival in your house! Now you have some basics.
In 4-6 weeks after starting to teach those things, you can begin to teach him things like ‘no bite’ or ‘floor’ (meaning to keep all four feet on the floor). You can also start doing some heeling patterns to help him pay attention to you instead of pulling on the leash. And you can begin to teach him to ‘come front’ while heeling. This will make the transition to teaching the ‘come’ command much easier.
As your dog masters each of these commands you can add another command to your repertoire. ‘Down’ means to lie down. Never use it to mean anything else like ‘get down off the couch’ or ‘get down off the guest.’ ‘Stay’ can be used with ’sit’ and with ‘down.’ Stays should be only a few seconds in the beginning, but can slowly be lengthened to several minutes.
Sometimes it is difficult to give a command that will be heeded because the dog isn’t paying attention to you. There are various ways to get your dog’s attention. The best method is to use lots of positive reinforcement when training.
Always praise your dog when he does the right thing - even if that is just looking at you when you say his name! Sometimes give him a small treat along with the praise. He will never know when he is getting the treat and when he is not, so he will pay better attention to you in hopes of receiving a treat.
