When Barking Becomes A Problem…

Dear Dog Lover,

Today we will discuss what you can do when this very natural behavior of your dog, i.e. barking turns into a persistent problem.

When barking becomes a problem…

Dogs bark to express themselves but it can become a nuisance for you and even your neighbors if he keeps on barking for hours together. Join our Dog Lovers Membership Site to handle many other such situations effectively and easily.

You can definitely try to change the behavior of your dog, but first you have to try and recognize the immediate reason that is making him bark. It might be that in place of anything big, you might find that your dog is simply barking because your neighbor’s cat is irritating him.

Sometimes a very small reason could be responsible for your dog’s bad behavior. Check all the small details. Make sure all his physical needs are met with. Check whether he is getting enough food and water, whether he is comfortable in his crate.

Don’t leave your dog outdoors for hours together. They don’t enjoy staying alone and are happiest when they are with their “pack”.

Also increase your dog’s playing and exercise him often, it will not only keep him active and healthy, he will be less bored. Boredom is one of the main reasons that leads a dog to incessant barking.

After you have checked all his needs and still find that he is indulging in loud noise, then you have to seriously try to make him stop barking.

Ignore The Bad Habit:

Ignore your dog when he is barking. Don’t even look at him while he is at it, ignore him completely till he stops. Any sort of attention, even if it is negative attention such as scolding will be looked upon as a reward by your dog. The minute he starts barking, completely withdraw your attention and ignore him.

Remember, it is not easy to change a habit, it will take time. Giving up midway and shouting at him won’t help. If till now you were meeting every demand of your dog each time he started barking, he is going to try even harder once he finds that you are ignoring him. But once he understands that barking is not going to get him anywhere, he will gradually become quieter.

Reward His Good Behavior:

After ignoring his bad behavior, don’t forget to reward him the minute he is quite. Give him attention, pet him, make him understand that he will get your attention not if he barks but only when he stays quite.

Make Him Feel Better:

If your dog is barking only when left alone, then it can turn into a very serious problem. He will start barking and whining every time you leave him alone. And your neighbors may have serious complaints against such behavior.

It is best to not to let this behavior develop at all, because you really can’t stop a dog from feeling sad or lonely. If you know that you will have to leave your dog alone for hours, start with smaller duration.

Leave him alone for a little time and increase it slowly. Let him get habituated with the fact that you might leave him for a little while but you will come back to him in the end. It will help him stay calm and deal with the situation better.

But if your dog has already got into the habit of barking every time he is alone, the job will be a little difficult. You can arrange for someone to check on him and interact with him now and then while you are away. You can record your voice and keep it on play mode while he stays alone, it will make him feel better and more confident.

Exercise Him More:

If your dog barks at anything and everything, then there isn’t much you can do to check him. These are the reactive barkers, exercise him more to reduce his hyper activity, but that is it, there isn’t much to be done here.

You can ask for your vet’s help to deal with your dog’s hyper-reactivity. If he is suffering from any medical condition, like hypothyroidism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), your vet will help you out with it.

Teach Him Who Is The Boss:

This is something every dog does, i.e. bark at strangers or to be more precise intruders. His main aim is to warn his human pack of the approaching danger. The only way to stop such barking is to acknowledge the warning.

You have to make your dog understand that his work is done and he can give up barking now. This is something you have to do. Usually with most dogs it is not a problem, just a “good dog” and a “pat on the back” can do the trick. But if your dog persists, use a stronger command with a stern voice, “Stop It”.

But don’t get confused while dealing with such a situation. Many dog owners jumble up things by shouting at the dog different commands, opening the door, welcoming the stranger all together. This will only confuse the dog, and he will only try to liven up the exciting situation with his incessant noise.

Take the situation in your hand, be firm while dealing with your pet. First praise him for doing his part, if he still keeps on barking, ask him to stop it. And if he still persists, ask him sternly to leave the room.

Don’t open the door till you are done with the dog, he will understand nothing “new” is going to happen till he is quite. It will take time but he will surely show improvement over time. And don’t forget to reward him once he stops his bad behavior.

Always remember, punishing your dog won’t help, he doesn’t understand punishment. It will only confuse him. Gradually socialize him to new experiences, take him to new places, introduce him to new things. Reward him for being quite and relaxed.

So, the next time he barks don’t punish him, first try to understand why he is barking and then try to deal with the situation. And don’t forget to love him and pet him a lot for his good behavior, because only positive encouragement can make your pet a well-behaved companion.

Obedience training is a step by step process which you build upon over time. It creates a foundation for your dog to learn additional skills and training commands. Throughout this process your dog will be gaining confidence along the way.

There are several common pitfalls that should be avoided. And once you take the steps right, the training process will be far more enjoyable and effective.
