Give Your Dog His Own Home

Dear Dog Lover,

We watched “Hotel for Dogs” last weekend. What a fun story - a bit impossible, but a great story of dogs and children persevering against the bureaucracy of adults! If you are a dog owner (especially if you have children or grandchildren), this is a movie you will want to rent. You will love the true-to-breed antics of the dogs and the ingenuity of Bruce.

Friday, the poor little dog of Andi and Bruce is banned from their foster parents’ home. The children try valiantly to secretly care for him anyway. They learn that dogs have certain needs: food and water, shelter, and a place to potty.

If you are reading this, I assume you have the food and water issues dealt with for your dog. Oh, there are lots of things to consider about nutrition, but we are just talking about basic needs now. When Andi goes to purchase food for the dogs, she comes back with more than she bargained for.

And we all know about the potty issues. Housetraining and potty training are issues I frequently address. But I don’t have any idea how to tell you to train your dog to potty like the dogs in “Hotel for Dogs”! Bruce’s ingenuity is incredible, but not as incredible as the training of the dogs for this movie.

In the movie, the little terrier Friday accidently discovers a great place for shelter - an abandoned hotel with two canine occupants who readily accept him. That only compounds the problems of the children!

Hopefully, your dog does not need to look for a new place for shelter every night like Friday. But there may be times that you have not thought about when he needs shelter. If you have a large property and your dog runs free, he needs shelter. If you have a fenced yard where your dog roams free during a portion of the day, he needs shelter. If you take your dog out with you while you do yard work or gardening, he may need shelter.

Various factors contribute to your dog’s need for shelter:

Sunshine and heat: Some dogs can get sunburn. Many white dogs can get sunburned skin. Dogs with light-colored noses can get serious sunburn on their noses. Many dogs are adversely affected by heat or high humidity.

Blustery, cold day: Many short-haired (and all hairless) dogs are very sensitive to cold. Does your dog have a place where he can go to get away from the wind or cold?

Snow: Some dogs love snow, but others find it difficult to function in snow. Some dogs are too short to walk around very much in the snow. And many dogs get ice balls between their pads when they stand and walk in the snow, a very miserable situation for them.

Rain or storm: There are days when a shower or storm pops up fairly quickly. If the dog is outside and the owner is inside, the owner may not realize it is raining right away.

Bully birds and squirrels: It is true that squirrels tease and bully dogs - even large dogs. The squirrels in my yard actually throw walnuts at our dogs and at us! And the crows swoop down and try to scare the dogs. My dog runs to the backdoor for me to let her in, but if I’m not there, she needs a place to go.

There is very little chance your dog will accidently find a hotel for dogs while in your backyard, but you can provide him a nice place for shelter when he needs it. He might think he has found a hotel built just for him.
