Dear Dog Lover,
You can do it! And you should do it! Do what? Why, routine dog grooming.
What is routine dog grooming? Routine dog grooming is done on a regular basis - some things should be done twice a week and other things should be done once a month.
I often do the twice a week things while I am holding my dog and watching television (football game timeouts are a great time to do grooming). This is a great way to spend time with your dog and give him or her some nice attention. My dog loves it!
Let’s look at the things I do a couple of times a week:
Comb or brush my dog’s fur. I usually do this against the way it grows so that I can see down to her skin and make sure her skin is clean, healthy and flea-free.
Check my dog’s ears for dirt, wax, or mites.
Make sure my dog’s eyes are clear and her nose is not running.
Look at my dog’s paws, checking for matted fur or breaks in her pads.
All of this takes me about 15 minutes on my small dog. On a very large dog, you might not be able to finish brushing the whole dog in 15-20 minutes. In that case, do a side or a section and then do the other side or another section 3 days later.
Once a month I cut my dog’s toenails. I do this after a bath if she needs a bath. When I give her a bath, I start by brushing her coat out to get rid of all mats and burs. Then I wet her down, shampoo and rinse her, and sometimes shampoo and rinse again. I use the correct shampoo for whatever she needs - there are special shampoos for various coats, for white dogs, and for various skin types. There are also special coat conditioners you can purchase for your dog.
I first towel dry her and then use a hair dryer on her. A pin brush or plastic brush is helpful during the drying process. After she is completely (or nearly completely) dry, I brush her coat out completely with a pin brush to make her look her best.
Even if my dog does not need a bath (my dog usually only gets a bath about 3-4 times a year), she gets her toenails clipped on a monthly basis. After a bath, they are softer and easier to cut.
There are some dogs that need a bath every 3-4 weeks, but many dogs should not be bathed more than every 8 to 12 weeks. A bath can strip the natural oils from the dog’s coat. Dogs need those oils to protect them from weather conditions and to make their coats look and perform normally. Learn what your dog’s coat needs so you do not bathe him or her too often.
